Pirate Bay founders lose final appeal in Sweden

Image representing The Pirate Bay as depicted ...

It seems the Pirate Bay’s legal drama has finally come to a end in Sweden where the Supreme Court today turned down the site’s final appeal. At the center of the case are the file sharing site’s founders Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde and Carl Lundström who have been battling Swedish prosecutors for a number of years now. After they were convicted of facilitating copyright infringement. The trio was initially sentenced to prison. They appealed the ruling in 2010 and though they failed to overturn it. They managed to see their 12-month sentences reduced by between two and eight months.

Today their final attempts were shot down with the Court’s dismissal. The fines and prison terms remain the same: ten months for Neij, eight months for Sunde and four for Lundström. There’s also a fourth co-founder involved, Gottfrid Svartholm, who has been absent from several hearings. Under today’s ruling, his original 12-month sentence will stand and the four men will have to pay a total of $6.8 million in damages. Because the case has dragged on for at least five years, however, there’s a chance that the sentences could be reduced by 12 months (bringing them down to zero), as is common in the Swedish legal system.

Mega Up Load user’s data to be saved

Megaupload’s website may have been shut down due to the presence of pirated materials BUT there’s still a series matter of all that legal content that’s on its servers. People want their files back and now the government’s has got what it needs, the hosting companies no longer need to keep the data around because Megaupload’s no longer paying them to do so.  So Carpathia Hosting and Cogent Communications have decided to preserve the data for at least two weeks while a deal is brokered with the DOJ for its release. In the meantime, the Electronic Frontier Foundation has teamed up with Carpathia to create a website that puts people in touch with the EFF so users can try to retrieve their data.

Sky to launch an internet based TV service

TV provider Sky (http://www.sky.com/shop/new?DCMP=KNC-) has just announced it will launch a new internet TV service which will be available to anyone in the country with a broadband connection. Sky is aiming the service at the 13 million UK households who don’t currently subscribe to pay TV. This new service will have access available via “PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone, games console or connected TV.”

It will offer Sky Movies on demand joined by sports and entertainment options later, with access based on either monthly unlimited subscription or “pay-as-you-go” pricing.

As far as the company’s basic services, it will continue to develop its existing Sky Go product for it’s standard pay-TV subscribers so this will be another competitor for firms such as Lovefilm and Netflix.

Sony Brings Out A New Trio Of New Cyber-Shot’s

We have just had a nice email from Sony appear in the inbox informing us that they have some nice new point and shoot cameras being released…

So let’s take a gander at the new Sony shooters.

You’ve basically got two models worth looking at. First is the expensive TX200V:

And its expensive for a reason. They’ve made it look as much like an iPhone as possible, flat glass on both sides. Unlike the iPhone however, this camera is waterproof down a depth of 5m. It has a 5x non-protruding zoom, for which they provide no F numbers, so it can’t be very fast though the camera’s back illuminated 18 mega pixel sensor makes up for that. It’ll shoot 1080/60p videos.
On the back is a 3.3″ OLED touch screen of the “Xtra Fine” variety, which we presume is a higher resolution than the previous 3.3″ OLED they put on they’re last few cameras. There are also no buttons on the camera except power, shutter, and a zoom rocker.

Next you have the WX70 and the WX50:

They share the same internals, but are different on the outside. The WX50 has normal controls: switches and dials and all that, and a 2.7″ normal LCD. The WX70 is like the TX200V, all touch screen on the back BUT with just power, zoom, and shutter controls on the top. The screen though is 3″ and the lens on both of them are 5x zoom, F/2.6-6.3. So nothing really special, but F/2.6 isn’t bad for a compact wide-angle. Inside they both have the same 16 mega pixel back illuminated sensor, which will shoot 1080/60i video.

Stay with us while we ask Sony very nicely if we can give these a field test to see if they are up to the job.
